Limitations

As a society, we face limitations all the time due to ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, health, or disability.  The barriers faced by many are no fault of their own, merely deeply rooted in history and the evolving times we are living in.  Changes are evident, but not equitable enough to create a level playing field for all. Limitations that individuals face may vary from person to person, some brought on by society, while most are the limitations an individual places on themselves. Overcoming these limitations is no doubt challenging since barriers faced by individuals can be both overwhelming and exhausting. Sometimes, we lack the motivation or fail to take the initiative to seek or create opportunities for ourselves. Maybe it is mere individual complacency that creates an atmosphere of hopelessness, limiting us from seeking our true potential. Often the lack of motivation creates self-doubt, where you are likely not willing to take initiative to achieve your goals. Remember, doubt can derail your journey, so why give in to that? It is ok to question your actions and postulate the directions you take in life. We must create the foundation for our success by tapping into our inner potential and overcoming any limitations placed on us or by ourselves. The individual limitations that we place upon ourselves create many barriers that impact trauma, addiction, illness, a job, financial issues, marriage, friendship, a new relationship, etc.

"The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself". - Maya Angelou

There are no limitations. There are no barriers. Nothing can stop you, and nothing can define you but you".

"Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional". - Roger Crawford

Personal limitations can vary from person to person; some examples are willingness to change and self-doubt. Barriers like change are a huge limitation that impedes individual lives and how it impacts a person's life and those around them. A positive change to overcome a limitation such as a barrier to change can be beneficial to numerous parts of life, and it can help an individual sustain a profound sense of well-being. Willingness to change can indicate the person's ability to make amends, work hard in achieving their goals, and even make the necessary course corrections in life. Well, one must want such a change or may need a change in the trajectory of the journey they take in life. We must all consider that various aspects of change can be impactful to individuals and not just as a limitation that prevents us from moving forward.  Willingness to change is vital and a first step to change. It is important to understand that with change, a person will have to adjust and adapt to a new lifestyle that changes bring about. As a person adapts to the change, they are faced with what they are adapting to. Consider that a limitation like change can be temporary, and will get better in time. It just takes time, perseverance, and determination to not let it be a limitation. Family and friends may also face limitations in bringing about change in those they care about. It comes down to this, is the person willing to change, or do they just lack the will to change? We all face limitations that prevent us or impede us from change, but that does not mean we should give up on change.

"Set high standards and few limitations for yourself."

- Anthony J. D'Angelo

"The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse."

- Helen Keller

"The superior man is distressed by the limitations of his ability; he is not distressed by the fact that men do not recognize the ability that he has." - Confucius

"Do just once what others say you can't do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again."

- James Cook

"Mind is consciousness which has put on limitations. You are originally unlimited and perfect. Later you take on limitations and become the mind." - Ramana Maharshi

We all experience doubt sometimes, and self-doubt can lead us to make a mistake or not take on an opportunity. Every one of us can do amazing things in life. Discouragement can lead to doubting oneself, especially when it comes from those closest to you. Often the lack of motivation creates self-doubt, where you are likely not willing to take initiative to achieve your goals. There lies the limitation that a person places on themselves. Remember, doubt can derail your journey, so why give in to that? It is ok to question your actions and postulate the directions you take in life. Sometimes, a certain level of doubt can be helpful; then again, always trust your guarded judgment. When there is so much uncertainty in our world, it is always good to be hopeful, yet remain strong and grounded in the choices we make. Have the faith to believe in yourself, the strength to stand the test of time, and the courage to follow through. It is important not to doubt yourself regardless of how challenging life gets. The moment you begin to doubt yourself, you will fail to accomplish anything in life. Why succumb to limitations? Do your best to overcome all the obstacles and challenges you may face. Each of us may experience various limitations; you mustn't let limitations impede progress. A limitation is a mere roadblock at a certain point in time, keep in mind there are always alternative routes to avoid roadblocks in life.

"Life has no limitations, except the ones you make."

- Les Brown
